Design Story
In 2016, Solange gave us the album we never knew how badly we needed. "A Seat at the Table" is a beautiful curation of soul-penetrating melodies, history-making lyrical prowess and tear-inducing interludes by the inspiring Percy Miller. It is, in short, sonically perfect.
The unshakeable pride Solange demonstrates for our heritage and unapologetic reverence she bestows upon Black women, is a gift we will never be able to express enough gratitude for.
Touring the country, performing for sold out crowds of mostly White people and singing the words, "Don't touch my hair," "This shit is for us," and "This shit you can't touch," while intermittently shouting out the "regal ass Black women" in the crowd-she is a world treasure and must be protected at all costs.
"Cranes in the Sky" is a standout piece on the album. Solange sings the lullaby that narrates what we've all felt - the overwhelm of trying everything one can think of to escape the pain we feel, while consistently being forced to face the reality of it all. In the song, she refers to the "metal clouds"- the industrial cranes she saw everywhere she looked and their looming reminder of our inclination, as individuals and as a nation, to build up rather than face what's in front of us.
For this piece, the cranes are represented by the feathered creature and constance has wings so that even when you're not ready to run, walk or crawl through... you can fly above.
